We racked our brains on how to avoid it but it seems impossible. We are so sorry to have to make this choice. We are currently working on ways to raise funding for these and other programs but at the moment we have to realistically consider where we might be at come the fall. With no finances coming in it makes it challenging to make these awards happen.
All of our awards are funded using our own finances. And, sadly, this includes the Dawson Award. But it does mean that certain programs are just not possible for us right now. Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) Sturt Australian Contemporary Craft Centre - Mittagong. 🎈 We are hanging in there and have some fun and exciting projects planned (that we hope you’ll all love 🙏 ). Resources for artists and designers including calls for submissions, exhibition information, Akin Collective programming, and other interesting articles, images and videos. What this all adds up to is a substantial loss of income and an unpredictable future for Spark Box Studio. We’ve also had to cancel most of our workshops, lectures and community projects. 💔 The Coronavirus pandemic is hitting us pretty hard. At the end of the end we will be re-evaluating when the program will reopen. Since 2015 they’ve leveraged their unique spaces to host three-week residencies with a particular focus on street art, urban exploration, and community engagement.
That decision is to close the 2020 Dawson Residency Award. Side Street Studios in Cape Town isn’t your standard art museum it’s a complex of studios, workshops, and galleries spread across three once-abandoned buildings.
